Default door handle escutcheon

When installing new door escutcheion for door handles in a foor door with panels do you put the sloping slot of the escutcheion in the center of the screw for the handle and at the hi end of the slop or the low end.also does it crimp over a backup plate behind the panel?

Is this the part you are talking about?

The part from the door needs to ride on the bottom of the oval with the deepest indentation on the top.

Install as Mike says, and position the escutcheon so the handle is at the bottom of the hole, so there is room for the handle to move upwards when opening.

thanks fellows that's what I needed. it just looked like a space in the slot above the handle was too much but that makes sense to give it room to go upward
