Default Substitute for the older Ziebart

When I restored Number 2 way back when, I found a gallon can of the original undercoating material called "Ziebart."

I brushed a coat of it on almost all of the unseen sheet metal in the Coupe body. Dried to a nice satin finish and not too rough.

I want to do the same on my 30 CCPU cab. What is a good substitute these days?

Brush-on stuff..

Larry

Pea Cup will not be a point car. I used the Ziebart on my Coupe for rust resistance reasons. That's why I'm searching for effectively the same material.

I think the old Ziebart had a Gilsonite (form of tar) base.

When I was in high school I had a $65 1955 Chevy 4 door sedan. I removed the seats and carpet and brushed tar on the floor, then layed down 2 layers of tar paper, and new just padding and carpet from JC Whitney. That carpet was as nice as factory original. I had comments that my car was quieter than their dad's new Cadillac.

I like the 3M rubberized spray on undercoating, and used it after repairing the deer damage on my Mom's 1999 Olds (now my car).

Truck bed liner should work.

POR15 OEM Bed Liner is one.

The old Ziebart that I remember from the mid 80's never dried completely. It dripped for a few days as the VOC's slowly flashed and then left behind a somewhat tacky, soft waxy coat something like the feel of fresh beeswax. The closest thing I've found is this 3M body shop product: LINK. There is also an 18oz aerosol spray can version of it, PN 08892.

Ziebart is good stuff! It doesn't dry to a hard finish, it penetrates seams, it remains flexible. Eastwood has a similar product that should work for you. Forgive the soapbox but rust is a pet peeve of mine.

Thank you! 2 questions:

Where do you get the original Ziebart? if not, what is the Eastwood Part Number?

Ziebart is still in business with franchises still around.

OK, I went out in my freezing cold barn and got the Eastwood part number. It comes in an aerosol can. Black Heavy Duty Anti Rust, 16031Z. If you go to www.eastwood.com you can check it out. I wonder if the Z refers to Ziebart, who knows.
Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in this.

The last car my dad had undercoated had something that I would describe exactly as Mike said in his reply #6. I used to tell people it was like a beeswax mixed with grease, or like a cosmoline substance. I sure liked it but never knew where my dad had it done. Click on Mike's link and you'll find the good stuff.

Good Morning, Tom,
I think this is the stuff where they sometimes drilled holes & sprayed it into hidden cavitives & popped little rubber plugs into the holes.
I drove beside an Old Chebby P.U, the door was SO eaten away, you could have replaced the WINDOW REGULATOR, from the OUTSIDE! I feel sorry for folks that live in SALT areas.
