Hello everyone,
I am installing a roof on a 1930 Ford Model A Standard coupe. I have the bows in, however I am not sure how the wire, blanket and vinyl goes in. Anyone know how to install them, or how I can receive steps on how to install the rest of the roof? Thank you. Heidi |

Stretch the wire over the bows and fasten. Next place the cotton pad, then the roof. You can add a layer of burlap stretched on top of the chicken wire (optional) if you want. I think it helps make a smother look. don't use foam in the roof.

i have a fordor. so it may be different. when i did my roof the wire was still intact. the wire attaches to the wood up to but not over the metal. I used a old poly comforter and some really cheap marine vinyl looks great though. i stretched the blanket and put tacks in about every 5 holes and trimmed it with fresh razorblades. then stretched the vinyl then filled most of the remaining holes with tacks. my trim piece was only saveable on the front so i used some adhesive trim i got from ebay looks pretty good. my car is a driver and doesn't need to pass a judges inspection. i think i paid 7$ a yard for the vinyl through amazon. but it didnt like when i missed the tack. so you should probably not get the cheapest stuff but the kits in the catalogs seem way to high in price.

This is for a Tudor but it's a good example since most if not all the techniques and principles apply to the simpler seamless roof covers.

Heidi,
Anti squeak strips go on top of the wood bows, then the chicken wire, denim material on top of the wire then the cotton padding, finally the top grained material.. Lebaron Bonney sells the complete kit with everything you need incld tacks for 95.00..... Tudors and Fordors 119.00.... Hardly outrageous and it won't look like a gazaweilo mobile ![]() Good luck Last edited by Mitch//pa; 12-20-2015 at 11:46 PM. |

I used a vinyl car top material to put a top in 36 Ford coupe many years ago. Used polyester quilting material for a pad over the wire and some polyester material to cover the quilting material(Batting). It worked like a charm.

Thank you for all the information. One more question, I have seen some people use masonite under the vinyl. Do I need to put this in before my vinyl or is it personal preference? Thank you.

I have seen the video where people put Masonite under the material (I am in the club that put the video together) but it is not required. Ford did not put it there initially so why add it? If done right you will get a slight bulge for the water to run off and look really nice.

I'm with Mike, do it the original way, and don't use too much padding where the roof looks puffed up.
Don't use foam rubber, as it breaks down with age. |
