Buttoning up the 276 8ba going into my '51 Tudor project, I have 2 intake gaskets in my Best Gasket kit. One is the common grey paper and the other is black, with a thin metal sandwiched in the middle. Set on top of one another, they are a perfect match. Following the old adage, "the dumbest question is the one you don't ask", which one should I use?
I was going to do a sexy trim of the paper gasket and masking prior to painting, to follow the intake lines, but if there is a benefit/need to use the sandwich gasket,..... well, that's going on as is. Thanks guys, going back into the 95 degree shop to get something done.

The metal sandwich gasket is far superior to the gray paper, which can delaminate (most are double layer) and shift causing a leak especially at the rear.

Thanks Cad, certainly makes sense. Kinda wonder why they even provide two gaskets.

Info is only as good as its source, but I was told the tin sandwich was for iron and the paper for aluminum manifolds. Tim

Hmmmm, I can understand that, I've used the paper before as that's all that came in my Felpro sets in the past, and I'm using an aluminum intake.

I’ve used the black thick paper gaskets, the kind you can port to match your block and intake, and they have never separated, let alone shifted. But my 59 engine has locating pins to keep the intake aligned. |

The intake does not shift...the gasket does. It's a double layer and it delaminates and one layer migrates inward toward the valley, opening a gap for oil to leak.
I am only offering experience here...I replaced the paper on my own 8CM with iron intake with the old steel core gasket to remedy this. Anyone is absolutely free to believe and do whatever they want.

yes, I've experienced the grey cardboard 'Best' brand intake gaskets de laminating and separating.
