I have a 1940 Deluxe Station Wagon (woodie). The driver side rear, outside door handle spring broke. It has proven to be a part that is used only on this model and year only. Although it may also be compatible with 1939 wagons and '39 and '40 convertibles.
From what I have determined there are no reproductions manufactured. I had my hopes pinned on a collector that thought he had one but we struck out. in fact he just had a spring fail on his 1939 convertible and is faced with the same dilemma. Does any one know of where to find a used or NOS spring or ideas about another version that may work? |

Try RPM he has visited you public profile page. He has accumulated a pile of 40 wagon parts. Twist his arm a little as woodie people tend to hoard their stuff...Good luck. Bill

You may have better luck buying a complete latch. I rebuilt one for a friend and if you have a lathe to make special rivets It isn't too hard. There is no spring in the handle, it is within the latch itself.

I had the same issue with one of the handles on my '46 Wagon. I found the spring at Job Lot in Queens. I understand they have closed or are in the process of closing. They had a box about 18"x 12" with dozens of springs. If you can call them and they are still open you may be in luck. Try an old time shop that may have the same box of springs.

Ross, I just checked and when I went to Job Lot I purchased extras. If '40 and '46 is the same I have one for you. Is there any way to post a tracing of your spring so we can match it? I am computer illiterate, so I don't know how to do it. You can also contact me at [email protected] if that is easier.

Here is an image of the spring. It broke at the point where it exits the mount located in the center of the "coil".
Hopefully this helps. I am waiting for the collector that thought he had one in his inventory to send my original back to me. |

That looks like a very common spring. PM me if you can't find one. If you take it apart, replace the rubber bumper in there.

Deuce_Roadster,
It does look common but I have been told the "look a-likes" do not work. |

Ross, I think I have it. If you E-Mail me with your address I can get it in the mail. Yes, unfortunately, Job Lot is closing. I have also used them for years and they always had what I needed, most of the tome NOS parts. I could be at their place in half an hour, very convenient.
