coil and cond and rotor crab 6 volt
A friend just called me, he has an original 41 pickup, original engine, 6 volt system, he want's to change the helmet dist to a crab, He just ordered the adapter from Speedway, easy question for Babba, what to use for a coil? and if to leave the resister under the dash? and is that RR145 Napa condenser all right for the 6 volt system? How about that coil from a 49-53 Ford and bypass resister? That must have an internal resister to cut the 6 down to 4. Thanks Walt

Re: coil and cond and rotor crab 6 volt
Walt,
A 49-53 coil should work with a crab. I would bypass the resistor under the dash.... |

Re: coil and cond and rotor crab 6 volt
Thanks Babba, I presume that Napa RR145 cond. will work fine with the 6 volt system. Thanks Walt

Re: coil and cond and rotor crab 6 volt
The 49-53 coil is approx 1.5 ohm resistance and adding a .6 under dash reisitor is too much.

Re: coil and cond and rotor crab 6 volt
Bubba ty - A stock 42 to 48 coil , would the resister under dash be ok then , so if you upgrade to a later type could the ohm value changes. What noticeable changes are there between coils when the voltage out put is about the same

Re: coil and cond and rotor crab 6 volt
The 42-48 coil mounted on a bracket on the intake has the resister mounted on top of the coil, not under the dash. Walt

A 6v VW coil also works fine as well as any GM 12v coil, they work just fine on straight 6v.

Re: coil and cond and rotor crab 6 volt
Easy way to solve all this is to check the coil you are using and see what the resistance is.

Re: coil and cond and rotor crab 6 volt
The resistor on the 42 is still under the dash. As far as I know they moved it in the 46 model. At least mine is still under the dash mounted on the board with breakers for lights etc.
