Default A better way to replace the pedals and clutch shaft bushings

At least is was for me. Here's what I found and what I did.. You will need a metal lathe and a good 3 jaw chuck.

Replacement bushings are made from brass strip and have some small dimples punched in the inside diameter. They also have a slit in them. No provision for lubrication.

The slit is formed when the flat brass strip is made round in a mandrel. The slit also causes major disasters when trying to install them because they start to move in two directions when pounded in.

The brass ones are also not very round, causing further installation problems.

Here's how I made mine....

I found some double Oilite bushings at McMaster-Carr that are 0.875 inside and 1.125 outside. Their part Number and nomenclature is:

Part Number: 2868T197
Description: SAE 863 Bronze sleeve bearing for 7/8" shaft, 2" long.

Get 2 for the pedals and one, that you will cut in half, for the two clutch shaft bushings.

Chuck up the bushing. Just enough to keep it from turning. Turn one side to 1.000 diameter. Turn end-for-end and turn the second side to 1.000. Let cool.

Turn one end to 0.950. Repeat for opposite end. Let cool.

Turn one end to .0937. Sneak up on the 0.937 by filing and polishing it to size. Turn end-for-end and repeat, blending in the two diameters. If you have an accurate chuck, they will be the same. If this bushing is for the clutch shaft, cut exactly in half.

The bores for the pedal shaft and the clutch shaft are both 0.9375. By making the outside diameter of the bushings 0.937, there will be a nice snug metal-to-metal fit that will not turn.

Now you have genuine oil impregnated solid bushings that will last a long time.

Thank you, Sir!

Another thing I discovered while doing the bushing replacement project..

If you machine the outside diameter of the bushings to 0.937, the press fit is gentle and does not squeeze the inside diameter to the point where honing is required. This assumes you have replaced both shafts.
