Question Spare tire mount on 28 pickup

What were the options to mount the spare on 28 pickups (steel cab not roadster)? Did they all have the fender well mount or was that an option? Was underneath the bed standard?

Left side mount was standard, nothing under bed.

Like Bob stated, the spare was typically mounted on the left fender using a welled fender. However, I believe I heard that for some big customers like the Bell Telephone Company, the spares were mounted on the right fender for some reason. The problem with 28/29's and a lesser extent with 30/31's, the fender mounted spare restrict the door opening. Obviously a pickup couldn't have a rear mounted spare.

A 21 inch spare does fit under....

This one with car bumpers provides the crossbar to throw it over and tie to.

If you don't have a fender well, I reckon this is better than throwing the spare in the tray.

On the Bell trucks they typically carried a ladder on the driver's side which would necessitate having the spare mounted on the passenger side. The driver had to enter through the passenger side.

I have a well on my right side fender, easier for the driver to get in and out. Pete
