Default Steering column support bracket

I have a 28 Tudor, can the 30 -31 bracket be bolted in? I don't have any leaks yet and don't want any.

Yes there are a couple of step by step procedures here on the barn. Let me see if I can locate them.

Here we go;

Thanks Mike, That's what I will do. It appears that there a gap in the old style on the upper side. Do you have the cap loose?

Nice step by step Mike.

aermotor, It appears that Mike just didn't reinstall the rubber insulator on the original clamp. It would rattle if left lose. I didn't either because you want the new mount to support the column.

As an added note I then used the old clamp to mount my temperature gauge. Since this picture was taken I have reinstalled the bottom clamp to make it look more "finished" (thanks Tom W. for the suggestion).

Some even leave the bottom of the clamp off all together, some just the rubber.

You probably would not have to do any changes as long as you don't pull on the steering wheel to get yourself into your car.

I agree and am glad I was warned about that early on in my Model A ownership.

I'm sure you are right but I was thinking more of preventative maintenance. After all that steering wheel has been vibrating on the end of that shaft for 85+ years. Metal fatigue? Plus how many "pulled" on that wheel before I came into possession For me, it's worth a little peace of mind...

I have a bracket in both of my 1929's. You do have to drill another hole in the frame around the window to attach the upper end to the dash.

Also I found that there are two different length brackets and this I don't know why. Maybe one is 1930 and the other 1931???? I don't know but maybe someone on the Barn may know. I had to work over the second one I installed because it was a little longer than the first one but it did do the job.

I agree and it's 100% reversible with no signs of use.

I think the '28-'29 ones are a little longer than the '30-31 brackets. I've made several of these RHD from cast aluminium after cutting up one from one of the suppliers to use as a pattern. I'm just going to fabricate the next one. Where's that angle grinder and welder????

I'll be adding the 31 column bracket to my car. It looks like good insurance. So that it looks complete, I'll use the bottom clamp but will use some soft black foam in place of the rubber. This will fill the space between the clamp and column but won't transmit any stress or vibration to the tank mounted bracket.
