Default Banjo Question

The wheels on a 32 rearend I bought will turn in opposite directions when turned by hand. With both wheels on the ground it is locked up, even pulling the assembly by the torque tube(not in car) the tires skid instead of turning. Thia assembly has been sitting in a barn for a long time. Any ideas on what is going on?

The pinion or driveshaft is locked up, the differential is working.

Turning the wheels by hand you are moving the spider gears only. Thats why the wheels turn in different directions and not together.Sounds like its had water in it or rust.

Bet you find it's rusted solid but may still be usable.

As an update, Removed turtle from torque tube and it was frozen. Drive shaft still would not turn, nor could I remove drive shaft gear and thrust washer. Soaked it with kroil over night.. Removed torque tube to carrier bolts. Used a small pipe wrench and turned torque tube and it and the driveshaft turned together to rotate wheels.Soaked the speedo gear again over night. A few raps with a hammmer on the trailing arm lug and the torque tube slide out along with the speedo gear and thrust washer. The area below the seal on the driveshaft was oily from the rearend dope and no rust visible. Still more evaluation is needed but I belive with new gear lube, drive shaft bearing, seal and cleaned up speedo gear, I believe the banjo will be fine.

Sounds like progress! Did you figure out the ratio? Should be easy now.
