Default Different Front Hubs

Hi,

Could someone please tell me what I am looking at here? I am rebuilding the brakes on my 1930 coupe and found 2 different hubs on the front. Actually also found 2 different hubs on the rear but I found the explanation of that (protruding ring vs. groove). Anyway I am curious about these front hubs. Are they both Model A hubs? Of different years? Is one a repop? The right hub has stamped tabs that appear to be to hold the outside bearing race. Also that drum was a greasy mess inside while the left was relatively clean.

Thanks,
Jerry

When we were installing a club member's drums on his old hubs we saw the same thing. We could not offer an answer to the difference either. Perhaps a Barn member has the answer.

I found the same on my 29 coupe. One front hub was a 1928 and the other 1929. Also the wheels are different. The 28's have a thinner center hub on the wheel than the 29. If you do have different wheels, don't change them on the hubs. The 28's don't work on the 29's.

I also had the same situation on the rear like you mentioned. I wanted cast iron drums so I sent the hubs and drums to Bert's in Denver and asked Steve to supply me with a matched set of 4 hubs and put new cast iron drums on all 4. He did a great job and then I found all 1929 wheels to work for the 1929 hubs.

No, the left one is with the lighter inside bearing flange. Rod

I had Snyders put on cast iron drums with my early 28 RPU front hubs not knowing one was a 29. Don traded out one hub for the correct one for no charge. Thanks Don!

That's the best way to fix the problem and make sure everything is correct for the time of build. I like parts to be period correct and match, so I'd trade the wrong hub for the correct one, and adding cast drums would be a big help.
