Well we did it! My grandpa and I purchased our fourth Model A despite our lack of resources. We spent the entire day yesterday dragging this car out of a very small one car garage. Once we got it home we couldn't get it to run with it's current carburetor (it was leaking where the upper half and lower half attach) so we swapped it out with a carburetor we knew was good and continued to try different things in order to start it. In the midst of the process we blew up the old battery (oops). But we eventually got it started to find a massive oil leak in the rear of the motor. What could be causing this leak?

I hope this is the source of the problem but the previous owner had a similar problem as he had a "diaper" to collect this steady flow of oil.

One of the members of my club purchased a 29 five window coup a couple months ago and it leaked copious amounts of oil. Turns out the drain tube was never installed. New tube now installed and it doesn't leak a drop. Hope yours is that simple.

I did some major engine repair on an engine out of an AA - couple weeks ago. Massive oil leak. Not a drip - it was a constant run the diameter of a baall point pen barrel. MASSIVE. Problem turned out to be Poor installation of Rear main Shims, Poor installation of Cork Seal in Rear Main Cap, poor installation of Pan Gasket - the tabs under the Cork Gasket had been cut off and one new gasket on top of a torn old one, Lots of RTV that had turned loose, and more than .006 clearance on the Main Bearing.
Rear Main Drain Tube was still intact and NOT stopped up. Point is. Rear main Leakes can be a multitude of previous problems - check them all. |

The problem might be as simple as a restricted or plugged up breather/filler tube.
1. A plugged tube will drain the oil pan in about 70 miles or less. Well the example I am thinking of; the oil was changed and at 70 miles the engine locked up! Someone had installed a green plastic "pot cleaner" in the breather tube from their old engine in their new rebuilt engine. The pot cleaner from the old engine was clogged. 2. Breather cap might have been smashed down on the breather tube blocking the breather. Last edited by Benson; 07-05-2015 at 08:09 AM. |

If the car has been sitting for a long time I would always drop the pan and change the oil before ever trying to start it. Once you have dropped enough pans and seen the sludge that settles you sure don't want to be trying to push that through the pump and the rest of the motor. Lot's of good information here on the barn for rear main leaks so take a few minutes and do some searching. Good luck!
