Default transmission install: Felt Universal Joint Seal

Should one trim the felt band that goes in the groves on the upper and lower Universal Joint Housing Caps? The ones I have seem a little long and are keeping the caps from pairing up flush.

I used a flat head screw driver to compress the felt into the groove. It worked thereafter.
