Alice and I just returned from Vermont. The main reason for the trip to
Vt was to deliver a part to Ron Halloran, aka 'Ol Ron. I can tell everyone here that Ron is the link between old tech and new tech with all things flathead. We spent a lovely 1/2 day at Ron's and looked at and discussed computer controlled ignitions, fuel injection and cylinder head technology. It became clear right away that Rons focus is not what you can achieve with a flathead it is WHAT ELSE you can achieve with a flathead. There are not many like Ron, I'm sure glad things worked out and we had this opportunity. Charlie ny |

I have had the distinct pleasure of visiting and talking with Ron. It is best NOT to say the word "camshaft" in his presence.

Charlie
I'm happy to hear that you had a safe trip and that you are back home again. I did try to hook up with old Ron at the Gathering of the Faithful last fall in Mass. but it didn't happen. Maybe I 'll get to meet him this year. Jay |

Well I enjoyed the visit as well, especially Alice, a real lady. Charley has a machinist back ground, so we hit it off quite well, although I'd never clasify myself as a machenist. I on;y wish I had the truck running. The reason he made the trip was to deliver a drivers side EAB head. I needed one for the angle plug mod.
Say Charley, have them check your rear axle, it sounded kinda bad when you left. If I had wheels I'd have chased you dowm. Take care and say hi to Alice for me.. |

Ron,
I noticed the rear end was making funny sounds as we departed our camp site on the Battenkill River. We stayed on the gorgeous back roads all the way home. I only do banjo rears so off to the dealer in the morning. Charlie ny |

We had the pleasure of visiting with Ron in Oct of '13, along with Chuck Lessard. Enjoyed the visit and got to eat one of the "best hamburgers in Chester".

I don't want to miss lead anyone abut my knowledge of camshafts. There design is pretty much a black art, or there wouldn't be so many grinds to choose from. However you can learn sumpin by trying different cams in the same application, I did that. The results were although the cam is an important part of the engines performance, on a short track the driver and suspension is more important. With a good engine a good driver in a good car can be a winner. we see this every week eng on TV at Bristal and other short tracks. Yes the longer tracks need tha special engine with just alittle more. John (JWL) and I ave talked over dofferent cams and the application becomes important. Street engines need a drivable cam with reasonable performance and great sound. I have my favorite and others have their's, but unless to try a few of them, you'll never know the difference. At present my 280 ci engine has a stock EAB cam, and heads. the heads have been modified by milling then .040" then using a die grinder clearancing them for .05" piston to head clearance. My second set will have the ancled plugs. All this is to invesagae the best way to get better fuel economy. And last ly, going to an engine management system.
At my age I love to try different things, just in case I missed something along they. Remember, it's the Journey, not the destination. And I couldn't do this without the help of others, thanks, youde guys know who you are. |
