Default New guy with lots to learn.

I am the proud owner of a 1934 Ford that I inherited from my wife's grandfather. It's a great car that he had lovingly owned and cared for over a 50 year time span. I didn't realize that I would be inheriting it, so I didn't ask as many questions as I should have when he was still alive. Now comes the steep learning curve. The car has a 59AB in it with a Ford 94, it's also been updated with juice brakes and 12V electrical.

It has some running and drivability issues. Whenever I come to a stop, the car dies. If I feather the throttle, it'll stay running, but if not, it dies every time. I put a new fuel filter on it, new plugs, cap and rotor. I also installed a distributor that was in the garage that was freshly rebuilt. It also stumbles under acceleration, especially from lower RPM under load. What are some baseline tuning steps that I should take to find out if the carb and everything else is working properly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That car is beautiful. Your grand father in law passed you a great torch to bare.

Thanks, it really is a beautiful car and I just want to do it justice. I want to drive it, maintain it, and keep the history alive.

WOW! That is a beautiful car.
Your wife's grand dad will be smiling knowing you are taking good care of it, just like he did. Be sure and thank him when you are cruising down the turnpike.

Menace -- nice ride. Cruise on over to the Early Ford Garage in San Dimas,
they can give the parts you need. Down the road from VIM Tools in La Verne.
Ask for Craig.

Menace,
Like LFG says get a rebuilt Stromberg carb, which is what your car had
new.
'34's used a model 40 Stromberg FYI. The Stromberg presents fewer issues to a
new to the ranks guy. A number of us on the Barn build carbs of many varieties but
I must recommend to you a cranky old gent who is the king of all things Stromberg
.........Uncle Max Musgrove.....from right in your back yard (sort of ) Salt Lake City .
Max will be along directly. Trust me, trust him !

Surely your wife's grandfather loved her very much and also thought highly of you. Beautiful car and you have come to the right place, many are here to help you.

Charlie, the only two things are that: 1) The car doesn't have the original engine in it, it's a 59AB with a Merc crank. 2) I have a 94 on it and probably 4 rebuild able 94s, lol. So, I think I'll try and stick with that carb for now. Thanks for all the input so far! I'm really here to learn as much as possible so I can keep the car in this condition for my kids. They love driving around in it!

If the car sat for periods of time with gasoline in the carb (especially ethanol), I agree that it is the probable culprit. It is a beautiful car, so please come back with your progress and results.

Charlie knows his 94's inside out.
Nice car,
Martin.

Beautiful! Do you know how long it sat? Might want to drain the gas tank and blow out the lines. I'd think about replacing the rubber fuel line at the fuel pump.

Again, gorgeous car, love the colors!

Really nice car! Think about joining the V-8 Ford Club of America. I noticed what looks like homemade upper radiator pipes (hoses), any idea why grandpa did that. As far as the 12 volt system and juice brakes, they make a great driving and safe car. I agree that your minor issues are carb and gas related and because you live in S0 Cal there are many places to get the parts you need, can't go wrong with the Early Ford Garage. They will not only have your parts but also great advice. Congrats !!!

Aside from cleaning the carb...get a BIG filter that can be opened and dumped out, Like the big Fram HPG-1...I suspect you are in for a lot of crud coming forward from the gas tank, and you need to stop it to avoid having to disassemble the carb every 200 yards!
Then drop the gas tank, get it hot tanked, and thoroughly blow out the lines when you can.
