Default Temps climbing

Since this truck is new for me I have been taking it out in prep. for tours.
Today was the warmest day so far 83 degrees and humid.

Took it out for a 20 mile spin on hilly rds. (that's all there is here in KY)

My Moto-Meter on raised up about an inch or so.

My APCO temp gauge which is installed in the upper hose ran into the red going up hills and hovered around the 195 which is into the red on the gauge.

I measured the radiator shell temps after the run. Top of radiator was approx. 165 degrees. Bottom was 155 degrees. I shot the oil pan and it was 160.

Do I have an overheat problem? I am not steaming or blowing out coolant. I am running 50/50 antifreeze.

Radiator is a three row reproduction which is only a year or so old. Coolant is nice green color.

Does Water Wetter help? Or running H20 with Water Wetter?

She is hilly and hot in summer in KY!

Thoughts and opinions appreciated!

This video should help. If your radiator is now and not yet plugged, you should be Ok. If the coolant stays in there while going up those hills, you are ok. Don't worry about the temps. 50/50 is better than plain water. Higher boiling point.

I really appreciate your response! That was a very good video. I ran it the other day 115 miles but it was only in the 60's it never got above 190 and it was hilly. All roads in KY only go up hill.. LOL

I love the truck just have had to dig deeper in the wallet getting it ready to cruise than I anticipated. I hope I am not being a pest... my wife tells me I worry too much.. Heck I have several classic cars and all have their moments.

Have it backflushed, to get rid of rust flakes in the top of the radumator tubes. THAT IS A MOST COMMON PROBLEM!!

timing off or not using the advance properly can also make it run hotter

Go get a cheap meat thermometer and stick it in the coolant to get the actual water temperature. That way you know for sure what temperature you are dealing with. When I first got my truck I used it a number of times just to get the feel for how it was doing.
Simple yet effective.

I really want to thank all of your for all the input on a topic that gets beat to death. (sorry about that)
I did do some other searches and I have concluded the problem is I put that darn temp gauge in !

The timing is dead on and the truck starts and runs great. I usually run advance about 3/4 and 40 mph on these hilly KY roads. I do run a little richer than whats in the books. My GAV is best between 1/2 and 3/4 open. It does not like running under hill climb load at less than 1/2.

My radiator temp after a hard run on an 83 degree day:

Top: 190
Bottom: 160

Radiator is maintaining level just above the baffle

Motor-Meter never got up to the summer avg. line.(about an inch)

I am going to let her roll!

Thanks again!

Dave,
Lots of CONFUSION about GAV settings Remember this, the GAV is just an extra jet to supplement the main jet, it can be turned on when the main one is just a LITTLE too LEAN. IF it affects the idle, then you have the idle speed set too HIGH.
CHIEF, my Dad, taught me: With a warm engine, cruise at a STEADY 25 MPH in second & adjust the GAV for the BEST running!
At that setting, if it starts OK when cold, just leave it alone & DON'T DIDDLE with it.
Minerva ran good with the GAV OFF, every carb is just a little different! I only ever had to open it a little when the temp here was BELOW 28 degrees
