Default oil pan

My question may have been ansewered but I haven't been able to find it in the archives. How do you remove the oil pan splash tray for cleaning the mud out of the pan without destroying something?

I know it sounds odd, but I put a baseball bat in the hole where the oil pump goes through the splash pan and, while prying outward, gave the other pan rail a little kick. The pan pops right out.

I turn the oil pan upside down at about chin level and drop it on the floor. The dipper tray pops out every time and no damage to the pan.

Open the link below for some pictures of the removal method oldbike99 describes. He is correct, it works great.

Wow, Fast response times. Got it done with the baseball bat. I must not be tall enough for the drop or the lining room carpet was to soft. Thanks guys.

Be careful. Very easy to cut your hand dealing with the tray.

I use the handle end of a deadblow hammer through the oil pump hole on the bottom and smack the hammer end with my hand and it pops right out without denting the tray. It doesn't take much force.

I have been grabbing the tray, through the oil pump hole, with my right hand and the edge of the pan, at the oil pump curve, and just pushing on the pan while pulling on the tray. Comes out no muss, no fuss.

This is exactly what I did and it works great. They pop right out.

This might be a little off topic, but is it possible my oil pump could have come loose and is sitting in the pan? I did an oil change a couple days ago and when i pulled the drain plug, the drip was very ver very slow, i put my finger up in the drain hole and felt something and when i lifted up, the oil came gushing out. I noticed the oil pumps have a spring on the bottom, what is that spring for?

Have you ever had oil pan off and/or cleaned of 'stuff' from bottom of pan ?
If yes to this question, then you may have a pump problem. If no, then you maybe stuck your finger up thru the goo that a lot of pans contain. Putting a hole in goo would then allow oil to drain.
If pan was off, did you properly put pump spring back...to hold pump up in place ????

I've not had the pan off on this car. What i felt was not the goo, i felt hard metal. I think i'm going to have to drop the pan and check the pump. This is the first time we've had the car running since we bought it. It was a pretty ratty barn-find.

If the pump has come loose, is it possible for it to actually shift and get clipped by the crank shaft? We ran it for a good 20 minutes on Sunday and even drove it around the block. There were no issues.

Thanks guys, it sounds like it would be a good idea to drop the pan and do an inspection. Thanks!
