Default Evapo-Rust (What happened?)

I have been using Evaporust with great results for a long time. About 2 weeks ago I put a bunch of loose nuts and bolts in an open container about the size of a half gallon ice cream container. Covered the parts with Evaporust and left them for about 2 weeks. When I came back the parts are encased in an almost rock like substance. I know the product will gum up but I have never had this to happen. Any thoughts on how to soften the gunk?

I had that happen with Phosphoric Acid. Had to throw the bucket away. Luckily no parts were in the bucket.

FWIW:

To save valuable time & energy, I have a hunch that if you called Evaporust, bypassed the front desk phone answering receptionist & bypassed the sales department, & go directly to either the manager or the Evaporust CEO, you will receive a logical answer plus satisfaction.

People at the top don't usually get there without having the knowledge & ability to pinpoint problems & to satisfy customers.

In my profession, in trying to keep up with constant changes in ASTM numbers & Federal Specifications & Regulations, I just do not have time to chat with the "canned" answers from the "programmed" nice telephone answering receptionist.

Hope this helps in finding the root causes of problems with anything you buy in the future.

The black residue left on is water rinse able, then I put back in clean evaporust to protect form rust. I would try hot water!

Not wanting to disparage a good product I think I have found the problem...Me!
In literally breaking the pieces apart I get the smell of phosphoric Acid. I think I must have used the acid instead of the Evavo.... My bad!

ER does produce a black coating eventually, but that one comes right off with water rinse and maybe a little work with a fingernail type brush. My understanding is that the black is actually the carbon that remained within the rust.
