Found a pic on Ebay...what is the purpose of the little rod sticking up through the hole in the bottom?

Ebay Link

Edit:

I see it's a hook of some sort, the one in this ad appears to have been broken off...more searching...just trying to figure out what I can come up with to make it work.

...Safety catch. In case the main latch works open... which it has been known to do on my 46 pickup. I'll get decent pictures tomorrow in the day light.

...Here are some pictures of the hood catch. The "hook" part has a spring to keep it pushing forward. Catches the hood from flying open should the main catch work loose. Also a picture of the main catch with the roller that the hood latch handle grabs on to. These panels/catches are a bit hard to find in nice shape. They took a bit of abuse over the years.
Hope this helps.

More/better pictures of front panel and latches. I just fixed and painted this piece. I have found on my parts trucks that these panels are usually damaged or parts missing or completely missing.
The top latch (curved part) can be adjusted up or down to get the hood closing/latching snuggly. The hook piece is the secondary/safety catch should the main latch open or fail. The small spring holds the catch forward to catch the hood should it open at speed.
