Thanks guys, for including "off the cuff" comments to posts. Sometimes what you experts consider minor comments really DO have a collateral impact. Specifically, someone made a comment, imbedded in a totally different question and answer, that engine idle speed could cause grinding of gears when shifting. I checked my idle, determined it to be too high and reduced it: no more clashing of gears - how simple, yet so effective! Thank you.
