Default Timing cover gasket?

The Timing cover gasket does not go entirely around the cover but is U shaped? Won;t this leave an opening? maybe I;m looking at the wrong gasket.

I think you are possibly looking at the oil pan gasket. The timing cover gasket should go all around

If you buy a timing cover gasket set, it comes with the part of the pan gasket that's exposed.
