I would if the babbit is good. In fact I'm wishing I had done that with an engine that had no shims and original babbit.

I always overhaul my engines. I use to just lap the valves. A few years ago I got better valve tools. I now cut the seats and install new stainless steel valves from Snyders. It makes a big difference . Lapping with compound does very little because usually the seats are pitted..

2.5 thousandths clearance is quite a bit. Compression should be 76 and all cylinders should be within 5.

My stock engine has 50 lbs on each cylinder and has good power. .0025" is borderline on what you should do. If you do short local drives, you'll probably get by OK for quite a while. If you want to put on lots of miles and go on trips, it would be best to have new babbit and shims.

BTW with .003" clearance on a newer Ford V8 I can hear the rods.
