A friend has a 46 Ford pick up and somebody put a 57 Chevy car rear end in it. It is now blown up. I am trying to help him replace it. What would be a good choice? What years Ford? How about a Scout? I would like an offer if somewhere in the area has a candidate. Thanks!

What kind of engine/ trans combo?
Nothing will fit better than a 42-47 Ford rear end. |

It is open drive as suggested by the Chevy rear. He drives it every day as almost only transportation. He also has no money with the expenses of his wifes illness and death. A open drive banjo is not available and he could not afford one if it was. I hope a 60 Ford? pick up might be a cheap choice. I know zip about pick ups. I need suggestions. Thanks!

If your looking for just a replacement, measure between the backing plates, and find one as close as possible. You can always buy a pair of cheap spring pads and weld them where you need them.

I used a Dana 44 from a 1956 Ford 1/2 ton in my 1945 1/2 ton but, they're getting hard to find. Might be easier to rebuild what he has assuming it is a Dana. Check with your local hotrod guys, they may have or know who has something that will work.
If you were closer I have a Dana 41 from a 48 to 50 Ford that could be made to work. |

I have a 60 ford 1/2 ton pickup rear , It sure is handy to swap out third members to change ratios if needed, wouldn't have it any other way, been running it for about 30 years now.

I'd think best possible thing, would to look for something more modern, and highway friendly than the F1 rearend...I'll get under my '42 tomorrow and get a decent measurement for you...could be a newer Exlporer rear, etc, would be right...keep in mind, even the Chevy rear that was under it, had the spring pads changed and relocated...so expect to do the same.
Just thinking if he had the Chevy car rear in it, he most likely might get baffled with an F1 rear, when he's winding up at 60 MPH. |

Check CTC Auto Ranch in Texas for a 57-72 Ford truck 1/2 ton 9 in. rear, same bolt pattern as front. 5x5.5 bolt pattern, Energizer brakes and tube shocks, all updates. May have alter driveshaft.. Not too hard of a job.

I'd go with the Dana/Spicer rear. F150 3 spd with OD.

I think the 57-72 might bolt right in. One guy on FTE claims he did and even the spring pads were in the right place. I would look more into the Ranger/Exploder rears, cheap to buy and lots of them are limited slip. Lots of guys like the Exploder disc but personally, I detest those hinky little parking brakes, they won't hold squat.
