Can anyone confirm that the WHEELS on this car are the elusive 16" X 5"-wide wheels that we occasionally only hear about being supplied on 1941-ish Mercurys? I'm not asking about the later 15" wheels.
Anyone possibly have any better pictures of one, possibly without a tire mounted, and especially of the INSIDE areas where the air pressure usually goes? Thanks.....DD |

The picture shows a '47-'48 Merc.
All '42 to '48 merc's had 15"X 5" wheels. I'm not that famillar with earlier Merc's, but many F1 pickups had 16"X5" wheels. |

After I looked at that pic for a while, I was afraid that those wheels may very well be the 15s. I knew about the '46-'48s being 15" X 5"......was not aware that the '42s were 15".
I'm still very interested in any pictures of the elusive '41 16" X 5" wheels, especially the areas of the wheel inside the hoop where the air goes. Thanks 42merc . DD |

Here are some pics of a pair of NOS 16x5 replacement Mercury wheels that I picked up earlier this year. These are dated 8 47.

I was just reading a Tom McCahill article the other day in an old Popular Mechanix magazine from 1947. Seems to me there was some mention of the Mercury having been changed from 16 to 15 inch wheels. that year. I will have to review it.

16x5 wheels were optional on pick-ups into the early 60's, so they might be easier to find. they are very similar to '41 mercs, but do have a couple minor differences.

My '58 F1 had 5x16" wheels on it. Originally was a Forrest Service truck.

They are a slightly different offset (1/4"), due to the differences in the stamping around the lugnuts/under hubcap.

I have a 16" x 5" wheel with a '41 date stamp, I don't remember the month. The rim date stamp is near the valve stem hole in the drop center area and some wheels are also stamped near the lug nut boss.
I have understood these wheels to have been used on Ford station wagons as well as the Mercs. Thanks Paul J. |

I have no info on the wheels but have to comment on just how much that car looked like mine the day I brought it home. My wife saw the picture and thought it was a picture of my 48.
