Interesting that the tail pipes were already being fitted with rubber hoses to evacuate the tail pipe fumes out side thru the doors. I liked how many advertised their establishments as lubrication emporiums back then. Thanks for sharing.

It looks like they are grease hoses, since each guy has one, but I don't know why they are so large, and I've never seen them coming down from the ceiling like that. We always had grease guns and hoses attached to the barrel on rollers. The hand pump was on the barrel top and just the coupling was on the hose.

We previously discussed this very photo in detail courtesy of the Old Motor website.
Apparently, this shop applied undercoatings to vehicles. That explains the odd looking apparatus in the foreground. This wasn't a Jiffy Lube. |

And, every automobile exhaust evacuation system I've ever seen, going back to the 1950s, has been made out of flexible metal piping, not rubber hoses. Maybe so, but that odd looking apparatus in the foreground consists of swing-arms and a large funnel, and one of the funnels is sitting right under the engine of the Model A in the foreground, as if to catch drain oil. |

I believe the hoses are connected to lubricant reservoirs up in the ceiling. They may be full of 600W oil. The guy at the rear of the car appears to be servicing the differential banjo. The guy at the front appears to have the hose stuck in his ear.
I have heard stories that when a car came into a Ford garage that was equipped with this type of 600W oil service system they would replace the hex plug on the steering box with a grease fitting so they could shoot 600W into the box. Thus became the legend that the box is supposed to be full of grease instead of 600W oil. Tom Endy |

Is the lube reservoir box suspended below the door and fed by that pipe?
