I bought my 28 roadster this year and entered it in driver participation class for this year.. I have had some problems with my car running hot, so I took my old radiator to a reputable shop that knows old cars and was given the verdict that the radiator was shot. A fellow member of the local club offered his used Brassworks radiator to me. I agreed and made arrangements to pick it up at Hershey yesterday, go back home and install it on my car. Due to a snafu, I did not get the Brassworks radiator, but an original one. In any event, I got the car reassembled last night and after firing it up and getting it warm, it appeared that my problems were solved. On the trip today, a very nice drive up Rte. 97 through Maryland and then through Hanover and up. The car started getting warm about ten miles into the trip. It seemed to like around 40 mph. Above that and on hills it would get hot. It would also get cool and then warm up again very quickly. Very puzzling, but not the radiator, I suspect. I replaced the water pump a few months ago and put a collar on it to eliminate end play. Maybe that is the culprit. I am stymied otherwise. I will hit the flea market again tomorrow and show the car on Saturday, weather permitting. I will talk with a few club gurus about why the engine is still getting too hot. Forecast for tomorrow is 70% chance of rain, 60% of Saturday. I do not like those odds. Car ran and handled great otherwise. I got 14.9 mpg on my first 80+ miles of the trip. Let's just hope we luck out on the rain. |
