Is it possible to remove the cylinder from the trunk lid handle of a '32 5w coupe without a key? I'm trying to get a new one cut. Any help will be appreciated.

I think ALL of the handles that have a hole to push a pin down for removal REQUIRES the key to be in and turned so that the wide slot in the key is under the pin which allows space for the pin to be pushed down. Otherwise the pin cannot be moved.

That's correct, THE key is required to remove the cylinder. I can remove the cylinder and make the key with no damage to the handle or cylinder. You can call me @ 845 457 3546 and we can discuss your needs. Phil

Removed the rumble handle from my 32 & took it along to a recent swap meet in hopes a vendor might have an assortment of keys,& to my surprise got real lucky, the first of two keys on a chain was a fit.

RB....I would like to adopt you (LOL) and have you try your hand at all the no key handles I get. I "hit" very few when I do what you describe...... and I have literally hundreds of "try out " keys. I hope you bought a bunch of Lottery Tickets after that !

Yes, the '32-48 locks seem to be very precisely cut and to have a lot of variations...my little collection of 20 or 30 has never gotten me a hit, and the things are beyond my amateur picking skills!
On older GM cars, hits are easy to get, practically turnable by a nailfile...and long ago, I had a key from an English car that seemed to work EVERY English car with minor jiggling! |

My 49 woodie tailgate handle cost me:
Labor for cylinder removal - $15 Replacement cylinder - $45 Re-key cylinder to match Glove box key - $12.50 Postage - $5.25 This is by a forum member in Iowa Leon who has done lots of good work for me. He tried all his tricks to get the cylinder out without breaking it but had to replace it. Happily he had the hard to find replacement cylinder. |

Both Phil and Leon are good with these old locks and cylinders. And both are real nice guys and big assets to our hobby. Phil and his friend went out of their way to give me a jump start on my seven year old battery at the National Meet in Gettysburg.

Deuce Roadster Here is the way to get the cap off. I just did a "lost key/locking cap" 3 weeks ago. I started out with the tire carrier (34 5W coupe). 17" wheel/tire mounted, 32 locking cap (no key....that's how I got involved), Metal tire cover with the band attached. To remove the cap and free the tire..... Once the assembly is off the car place it face down ( don't damage the cap) . Drill a hole through the tire carrier into the area directly behind the rear of the wheel hub and in line with the center of the locking cap. The bigger the hole the easier to access the lock. (You can always weld/plug the hole later. We left it open in case we 'lose" the key again!!) Remove the screw holding the back of the lock and the three locking fingers. It IS a screw...... some may look like a rivet but it will unscrew. Take the cap off and send it to me and I'll make ya a key !! Call if you have any questions Phil 845 457 3546

32 Phil ...Beginning to think in terms of buying that lottery ticket, as of this past weekend,Sat. to be precise, I responded to a local paper classified estate sale ad listed as a car buff treasure trove of parts. Found nothing overly exciting along my line of interest so called several friends who picked up a few items. Returning the following day for a closer look & everything at 1/2 price, I sorted through a total of 175 door, deck & glove box locks all G.M.,FoMoCo,MoPar,Nash etc.all with keys & some tied off with matching locks &/or key numbering tags. My Sport coupe happens to have an aftermarket door lock & as luck would have it, among them was one each 32 door & ignition locks..someone pinch me I can't believe it !!!!
