Who can rebuild my 1930 AA Service Brake Cross Shaft?
Some one reputable and reasonable. Most of the big catalog dealers only do the A cross shaft. Thank you. ![]() |

Describe exactly what you are needing.
FWIW, I started fabricating a spring hanger centering adapter where I could weld up the rear spring forward mounts (they rivet to the frame) and machine them in the lathe where the new bushings would be tight again. I kinda got stalled on that project when my customer found a nice frame, but we could get started on that again if it would help anyone. |

do you mean the rear spring PIVOT point? Thats the point where the top middle of the leaf pack is attached to the frame... It generally gets badly worn as thats where all the force from the rear axle goes to. always wears the bottom half making the shaft egg shaped.
i would like to see a tool produced that can either A cut down the shaft a small ammount and make it round (use oversize ID bushing) or B one you can weld up then make round again. I think Tom Wessenberg (sorry for the mispell...) has a hand powered lathe that bolts to the stud and you wind it around and around as the carbide tip takes light cuts off. Obviously labor & time intensive but gets it truly round again....

I don't know why Brattons couldn't do it, the AA uses the same bushings
as the A. You could also buy the repair kit and do it yourself. Bob |

Again I'm betting that Berts in Denver can do the job..The way that I found out about Berts was through an add in Hemmings back in 1990 saying that they specialized in AA's , I'm pretty sure that they still do. Steve once sold me a rebuilt transmission tower and shifter for my four speed uncle Albert AA truck outright with no exchange . After installation it shifted like a new truck. Before I just had to feel for the gears and at times it would almost coast to a stop before I could find a gear .. It can't hurt to try . Phone 800-321-1931 .

I need the one piece bronze cross shaft bushings installed. First I need to make sure that the A one is the same for the AA.
FYI> Snyders only does the A ones, Bert's does not do them, Brattons gave me the ID of the bushing to measure my shaft to see if it fits. That is my next step, unless you know for sure. This AA stuff is a tricky with the cross over of parts from the A, I am trying to figure out the front end now. I am told the steering ball studs are larger for my AA?? |

The cross shaft bushings are the same as the A, #BB-2477.
The steering arm balls are the same size. The tie rod ends are the same also R.H. B-3285, L.H. B-3286. Bob |

I agree too: the cross shaft bushings are the same size for the A and AA. I used the one piece bronze bushings for the late '31 AA dump that I'm working on. I actually didn't need to weld the shaft up: it was still within tolerances amazingly enough!

I did my A cross shaft today and it wasn't difficult at all. If the bushings are the same size most people can easily do it themselves, especially if the shaft isn't worn because then you can use the split bearings. My shaft was worn and I needed to put the shims on, but it still wasn't hard.

If it goes thru the frame rails you will need to remove both cross ahft arms - rather hard to do as drilling out the rivet is necessary. i did that to mine and they still didnt want to come off... got lucky and found another shaft so i cut the badly rusted one in 2 pieces to get it out...
i used the 2 piece bushing and loaded them up with dry graphite before assembly. seems like it should work.

I used a "hot wrench" (torch) to heat up the shaft arms and they came off with very little persuasion.
