I don't know about cheapest - but I put in a 6 volt negative ground alt - works great.

Got it from Jeggs - the matched the cheapest price, free shipping & service/delivery was very fast.

Halogens draw about twice the wattage of regular sealed beams. I put an alternator on my '47, and the lights were even dimmer than the regular type. The problem is caused by loss in the original wiring and switches. My solution was installing a relay board. The relays are operated by the original system and provide full power directly from the battery. If you want to see the difference, halogen or regular lamps, put a jumper of at least 12 gauge between the battery and the lamp. Old switches and poor connections combine with the small wires to choke the power with high resistance. Choose a two wire alternator over the single wire type for the best results. It is switched on by the ignition switch and doesn't depend on revving the engine.

Why do you need an alternator for halogen head lamps? I've run cars with dynamo (generator) and halogen lamps, not a problem. And this is with Lucas 20amp dynamo. What amps is the Ford 6volter?
Martin.

You don't need an alternator for halogen sealed beam lights. Wagner's are about the same amperage as the old regulars but they are brighter. Wagner doesn't even make the old style any longer. I know most people do not believe this but they just don't know! I've used them for over a year with no problems.
