I don't recall seeing any original seat springs with metal tags, but the other day I found a tag on a very rusty rear seat backrest spring with a metal tag. It was on a 1931 Slant Window Town Sedan with flat firewall. The tag is 2 7/8" long by 1/2" wide and looks like a thin strip of zinc. It was hog ringed to one of the coils of the seat backrest spring and has the number 164120A stamped into it.
Does anyone know if this is from the factory, or has anyone seen a seat spring tag before? Thanks |

I have a set of original 30-31 Roadster seat springs with a metal tag on the seat spring(one you sit on) like you describe. It's over in the junk barn, but next time I'm over there I'll look at it and see what it says.
On a related note- I've seen these tags more frequently on 40s & 50s Ford products than I have Model A's. |

The backrest spring on my S/W also had a tag like you described. (I wouldn't be able to check the number until this weekend.) None of the other springs had one.

That's fairly common. They had to keep track of which was which some how! That is the correct part number for the rear backrest spring. It's worth noting (or maybe not) that there were A and B versions and I have no idea what the differences were. The "A" may may have been for the 160-A (standard).
About 25 years ago I encountered set of springs in a car that had paper tags as I recall. They included the supplier's name and "Oakland, California". The car must have been built at the San Francisco branch. It also indicates to me that Ford had regional suppliers for some items to improve logistics.

I was rumaging under the back seat area of my '29 Tudor the other day & noticed a metal tag attached to seat springs. Tried to get a good look, quite flexable metal & with original black paint same as springs. Ive had this car 42yrs & do recall noticing this tag maybe many years ago.
So now I know what it is there for, thankyou. |

Any Tudor seat gurus?
I'm restoring my seat springs/frames on my 29 Tudor. Is it normal for the front seat springs (cushion/base) to not quite fit nicely inside the metal legs of the hinges as they sit on the wooden frame? There is a 'cutout' in the back corners but they aren't big enough to avoid the hinge legs. It appears to me that the metal spring frame will sit over the top of the legs? BTW the tags on my untouched 29 Tudor seat springs have 57460 or 57608. Thanks, Gus |

Gus,
We have many original tudor seats and the cushion spring always overlaps the seat leg. Don't know why,but that is how Ford made them. |
