Smile How much rotational play in distributor rotor?

Hi,

How much rotational/angular play is normal or accepted in the distributor rotor?

Hey, that's brave asking for an opinion on this forum! My opinion is that so long as it works, advances and retards effectively then the play is acceptable- (unless of course you've paid a lot of money for new camshaft gears etc, in which case I'd expect the play to be just detectable to wiggling rotor with finger and thumb). (Give our love to Roskilde and Denmark- we're back home in UK now )

As John states, as long as it works. since when you time the engine you take into account the rotational play there should be no worries. As for published specifications, there are none.

The reason for asking was: If the engine runs bad/rough whatever, if the rotor play could be the cause.

This one might be considered too much rotational play.

The side play is more critical, as that will alter the points opening and timing. If you factor in the rotational play ALL to be on the leading side of the rotor, then it shouldn't hurt a thing. I don't believe the points spring pressure is going to push the rotor forward due to pressure on the cam lobes.

if your only talking rotor play (rotor to dist. shaft) then it won't effect the running of the engine. But if your talking about dist. shaft play, now that will effect the points and timing and can cause running problems.

....in my case I have a clearance of about 1.5 degr, makes a miss timing of +/-2 deg and is acceptable but not perfect for low idling..

Cheers
