If it's like a '40 there is a small metal box on the back of the dash. That box holds the bulb and there is an elongated hole on one side that allows the box to slip over the high beam jewel. Move the box upward to disengage it from the jewel and pull outward to release it.

The bulb holder has a bar with a tapered slot in it.The small end of the taperlocks the jewel in place. The large end of the taper slips over the end of the jewel. The difficult part is trying to determine which end is the large and which end is the small. You have to slide the bulb holder in the correct direction to loosen it. Since the bulb holder is free to turn it could be any way.
