I'm cleaning out an old barn on our Ohio farm. Got some RUSTY pieces of flatheads, and want to reduce size of pile. Rear axle housings are pitted, as are torque tubes, shocks, front axles, backing plates, and drums.
I'm thinking of scrapping rear axle housings - keeping gears and axles? Since front axles are pitted - scrap? Some drums and wheels ( 5 wide and small pattern) are rusty but usable; some are trash - probably should scrap the whole mess? Should maybe save the 37 engine and tranny - know they have been barn stored 40 years, so may be something usable in them. Anything hard to find I should NOT scrap? Steering boxes, mechanical brake linkages? Got all I need for my 39 pu's in Colorado. Thanks, Gordon

Don't thro away any thing. If you want to get rid of it bad enough post it on the barn. Walt

If the rear axles are junk, the 2 tubes can be cut and made into excellent jack stands. The gears would still be salvageable. I am with the others, take it all home and then sort it all out. Advertise what you don't want or need. You never know what someone needs and would be happy to get it.

Save that engine especially and check it out! It must have had some value or wouldn't have been saved all these years. Just about all those parts are not being reproduced and have value to people restoring their cars. Just my opinion !

All the working parts are protected (hubs are still on the axles etc. You could probably dismantle the rear axles, but that is a lot of work just to gain a little space. Probably just some limited dismantling to make for more compact storage, would be do-able. I can see the makings of a wicked little hot rod there, with some spares left over. If the axles are 3.78's or 3.54's that ups the ante a great deal, not many people want 4.11's. 37 axle with the hydraulic brakes off the later axle, wide 5 or the 48 hubs. That's the rear end sorted. At the front you have 37 spindles, and the hydraulic brakes if you have the 48 front end parts too. both steering boxes are good to keep as are the steering wheels etc. There are LOTS of good parts there, I wish they were in my yard. Mart. |

If I were closer, I'd make you an offer for it ALL. Not easy to find in a major metropolitan area.

I'm starting to develop my 37 Ford Coupe and have the original running gear, including wide 5 rear axle with wishbones, both front and rear spring packages, and a few other parts. Anyone interested in a road trip to colorado springs?

Thanks all for the replies. Amazing what Midwest humidity even in a barn, and an earlier few years in the woods did to these parts.
I kinda figured you all would say "save it all" but stuff was real bad when I got into it. Most of the wheels and some of the drums had rusted through. Backing plates were shot - might be a few brake parts usable. I saved diffs and axles - still in housings, which are really pitted.Splines all seemed tight Wishbones are pretty thin in places, but torque tubes and drive shafts were good. Most 37 engine components seem useable, but engine is stuck. It always had air cleaner and caps on, so hope its a good core. 37 tranny shifts well; lots of oil still in it. Next trip I'll dig into the front axles and see what's there. Appreciate the input. Wish there had been more good stuff. Scrounging's part of the fun..... Gordon The steering boxes were good - know I needed some of those parts. Next

Me too. What is wrong with pitting? My cars are made from stuff found in swamps and salt water trailers so they have plenty of pitting.
Wishbones i would repair even if i only had the heavy end pieces.

I'm up for a road trip, what'll you take for the engine and trans? My 36 is original and running fine, I would just love the experience of going thru the engine.
Thanks, Tim |

Dean,
I might sell the stuuf. Reason I asked the question originally was that it costs $1200 to drive to Ohio and back to get it. Two problems. I have been thinking of using the tranny in a 39 pickup. I don't know how to price it. Did you see the engine in southern Ill on Epay? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-flathea...849697&vxp=mtr Seems reasonable if any good. Gordon

Why would anyone want drive shafts/tubes, torque tubes, wishbones? They seem pretty common with so many "modernizing" flatheads these days.
Please understand I'm not asking value to make a killing selling them. I think most are "giveaways". Gordon

Every thing seems common until I have to find one.
![]() I will echo what has already been posted. Save all that you can.If you don't want to transport list it for sale where it is at if you can. To someone building an old time Hot rod tourque tubes are used for lake style headers. Parts and pieces from frames can be cut out and used to repair bad pieces in other frames. Front axles would have to be extremely pitted to be worthless. And on and on...... Plus frankly some people just want the stuff to have hanging in their garage. Good luck in your efforts. Torchie. |
