Default Speedometer Cable Housing Specs

What is the proper length speedometer cable housing?

Or, to make a short question long; Coupled with the speedometer, how far should the key on the transmission end of the cable protrude from the end of the housing?

I think may have ended up with an aftermarket housing which has the coupler crimped on in the wrong place.

The housing is too long, so I'd like to shorten it and crimp on a new end in the right place...
