Default 49 steering wheel

Can someone tell me if this is a 49 steering wheel? Also what year did the automatic gear indicator come from?

Appears identical to my '49 steering. About the automatic indicator, sorry - no idea on that one.

Looks like a '51 column that was used to accommodate the later automatic that sits behind the non-flathead OHV engine.

I agree, that is a '49 wheel. The Ford-O-Matic came out in '51. It appears that someone put an automatic in your '49 along with the steering column. If you have a space between the wheel and column it may be corrected with using a '51 wheel, not real sure though.
