i called a place yesterday to order a 16 spline GM powerglide yoke that is about an inch longer than the original yoke. I installed a 9in. rear end, the driveshaft is about an inch short. Ross F-1 suggested the longer GM yoke, but the guy at the driveshaft service says with the extra inch on the yoke and not the driveshaft will in time wobble out the seal and main shaft on the trans. He says that the yoke should not stick out any further than 3/4 of an inch. Also said that the yoke should have about an inch clearance so it wont bottom out for rear spring travel. 75 for a yoke or 200 for a new driveshaft. Kinda stumped...Ideas?? suggestions??

Find a longer drive shaft at a junkyard and cut it down. Lots of how to articals out there.

Not sure it can only be out 3/4" but also have an inch of clearance at the same time? It can only be one or the other.
Normal rule is all the way in and pull it out 1". If the yoke Ross mentioned works for him, it should work for you. with the longer yoke and it being wobbly cus it's one inch longer, don't ring right. If you think about it, the longer yoke still goes into the trans the same amount, and is supported the same as the stock one. It's only the bit outside the back of the trans that's sticking out more. Get it? Obviously you can't beat the correct length shaft, but your money not mine. Does Ross use this yoke? Martin. |

I used a longer yoke on my 48 F1 - 9" combo. With the HD 3 spd the slip yoke was on the trans side instead of the diff side, but the principle is the same... ran it as a daily driver for over 10 years that way with no problems.
I picked mine up at a local custom driveline shop. |

Just to be clear, I haven't used the PG yoke, but I knew of others who have with good success. Right now I am running the stock driveshaft with a pinion yoke on the 9" that is an inch deeper than the most common type. My yoke at the trans is out a little further than stock, but doesn't pull out under any conditions. My yoke at the trans is leaking a fair amount, mostly because it's got some wear, but I suspect also because it's out further and wobbling some.
No question that lengthening the DS is the preferred solution, but there aren't many DS's that diameter that are longer, that can be cut down. The stock DS is about 62" long. So re-tubing looked like my only option, at about $200.

What works for late model cars with an output shaft with longer splines doesn't always work with old cars. I bottom out the shaft then pull out 3/4 then measure for driveshaft length on F1s.
