On page 26 in my October 1, 1929 PPL is a picture of some generator parts.
A-10096 is listed as a bearing sleeve for the long generator (1929), but I don't recognize the part. A-10097 is listed as a bearing spacer, but the picture is of the bearing retainer plate. Below is a picture of the 8 parts that go to the front of the armature on a long generator for 1929. Does anyone know what the A-10096 sleeve is? ![]() |

I went to the MAFFI site and they show A-10096 as bearing sleeve, Autolite
number GBF-16. In the 1932 part book they corrected the retainer plate error. Bob |

Is the October 29 parts list late enough to include the "sleeve bearing" later generator? One could probably tell if they have the later rear sleeve version end plate.
My Dec 32 version of the parts list shows B-10097 Spacer (Generator Bearing)(WAS A-10097) (Pix shows a distinct ring shape.) No entry for anything marked 10096 (A or B) A-10129-BR Plate (generator rear end) Assembly 1929-30 (Early version for ball bearing) A-10129 Plate (generator rear end) assembly 1930-32 (Later version for sleeve bearing) B-10128 Bushing (generator) (was A10128) 1930-32 (This the oillite bushing for the commutator end?) A-10094-AR Bearing (generator) commutator end 1929 (one assumes this the ball bearing used for a short time in 1929?) Joe K

No, the rear ball bearing ran from late 28 through March 1930, so it would be on all the 1929 long generators. I still can't figure out the sleeve, because all the 1929 long generators should have the same parts as in my picture above. |

Go to www.maffi.org then go to the red rectangle that says "Model A Parts Index". Then you are there. When looking up a part, just type in the part number alone such as 5312 and there you go. Pluck |

I'm betting A-10096 is a small sleeve that is pressed onto the shaft just behind the commutator since the number follows A-10095 bearing for the commutator end. Is that possible?

OK, I finally figured it out. I was thinking only about the front end of the armature, but thanks to Marco's rear bearing comment, I looked at the rear. It turns out this A-10096 sleeve fits into the end plate for the rear ball bearing outer race support. It's a part that never wears out and never gets damaged, so I've never removed it.
Here are 2 pictures showing the rear of the armature and end plate parts. In the first picture I just removed the bearing and a bent up half of the felt retainer. Someone messed this up and left out the felt and other half of the felt retainer. The armature shaft has a step in it for the rear bearing inner race, but it appears to be a one piece shaft. In the second picture you can see the end plate and it's parts making up the bearing outer race support. The sleeve is pressed into the end plate and the notch in the sleeve must line up with the oil hole. Then the spring is layed into the end plate with the 6 fingers pointing up. Then the thin washer is placed over the spring fingers, and the outer race is slipped into the sleeve. Be sure to grease the parts as you install them. |
