Default Insurance

I have insurance on my 1930 Model A Coupe as a part of my regular car insurance policy but have heard I can do better with a company that specializes in antique cars. What do you think? Who do you recommend?

State Farm and some others pay good in the result of an accident but the model A will be depreciated as a used car. In such cases, a vehicle that is five years old or older , it gets depreciated a hell of a lot. I have many years experience in the collision repair business..

Collector car insurance companies like Hagarty and grundy offer agreed value insurance. You insure the vehicle for an agreed amount and if the vehicle gets totaled, they pay the full agreed amount without subtracting for depreciation.. The insurance companys don't allow you to use the collector car for regular transportation. Collector insurance is usually much less expensive. If you plan to use the model A for daily use, your regular insurance carrier will be the way to go.

Carful on the antique insurance. Many companies have limitations on the where, when, and how far you can drive. Look into it before you sign.

Been with Hagerty for years. They have my A as well as a 'Vette and a couple of others including a '39 JD tractor. In 2012 I went on the Hot Rod Power Tour. Called and asked if there was any problem taking the 'Vette or letting a buddy drive part way. The said, "no problem, go and enjoy the car. That's what we want you to do." I have never had a claim but I have heard they are just as good when that time comes... hopefully never!

My policy is with Allstate, is an "agreed value" policy with no restrictions on use. Cost is essentially the same as my newer Explorers.

It is also licensed with the state as a "Collector Car" which costs the same as my later model Explorers, and has no restrictions on usage.

I just renewed with Hagerty and will share real numbers.
1929 Roadster agreed value $18000
1977 Jeep Agreed Value $7000
Full coverage, no deductible, no towing, $300 per year for both.

yea insurance company doesnt take into effect current market values, they see it as a 80 year old car and that = about $400... they dont care that your fender costs that - its totaled if someone backs into it in a parking lot.

I have been using Grundy since 2000, because they don't have a mileage limit.

I agree, thats why I use collector car insurance. I now use Grundy because they offer unlimited mileage. However they don't cover the model A for primary transportation. Another important consideration is to be sure and insure your model A for enough for your protection. The insurance companies sell the total loss cars to salvage companies to recover losses. In most cases the owner doesn't have the opportunity to bid unless they have a salvage license. Salvage bids can be high on a totaled roadster. If the insured value is low, it won't take a lot to total your car.
