Center bumper clamp orientation question

I am uncertain how the backing plate is installed for a center bumper clamp. I am attaching a picture of a round 28/29 center bumper clamp and backing plate less the cladding that I am having replated. Is this the way the backing plate is installed? It seems backwards in the picture, but if the backing plate is turned abound, the nut doesn't seem to contact enough threads on the clamp stud correctly. Would someone that knows for sure which way the backing plate is suppose to be installed, please post a message. I guess I should have paid more attention when looking at fine point cars.

I would be keen to know the answer to this also. I always thought the backing plate was opposite to your photo, & the one on my car was like that from the '60's but I reversed it after discussion here said no.

Yes reverse the back bracket, the square end of the front piece fits between the bumper bars. Your threads may not be long enough.

The flat side of the backing plate goes against the rear faces of the bumper bars. That way, there will be ample threads from the stud to tighten the nut onto and it will fit snug against the bars.

Thanks Mike V and Gary. I forgot to look in the Judging Guidelines first. I didn't remember the center bumper clamp page that Mike posted the link to - getting old and forgetful. The backing plate looks backward in my picture, but there isn't enough length on the stud for the nut and lock washer if it is turned the other direction.

Looking at the JG's, it appears the both later style oval center clamps have their backing plates (the narrower type) orientated the other direction. I have an oval 29 style clamp (third emblem in the picture in Mike's link) I will need to install in the future and I want to make sure it is installed correctly.

if that is an original clamp and you want to use it, weld some threaded rod on the stud so you will have enough thread,,, otherwise find another with proper length... welding on is what i did once on an original.....

You BETTER do it correctly. A friend mounted one incorrectly and put a nice outward dimple in the face of a nice NOS clamp. I had to peel it, repair it, and have it replated!

I removed an original 1928 clamp from an old long out of business junk yard Coupe. I lost the bid on the car, but was able to buy the emblem from the antique shop that bought the car. It was mounted just as your picture shows in #1, and I'd bet that clamp was never off. If you have an original clamp, you know it doesn't need threads added to it.
