Its fine for cast iron but will not help head gaskets if they are already hurting. Ive got a 31 Oldsmobile sitting here with the block full waiting for the head to come back from the machine shop.

Vinegar is acetic acid. There are a lot of folks who use it as a cooling system cleaner without a lot of problem complaints. Phosphoric works well on iron but isn't s easy to get or as cheep to purchase as vinegar.

Before using vinegar read this thread about the advantages of Evapo-rust over vinegar and my scientific test that shows it. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123032
