Default steering shaft length

Does anybody know the length the steering shaft sticks out of the column on a 40 Ford? I modified what I thought to be a 40 shaft but the steering column busing is in the wrong place. I need to know either the length the shaft sits above the column, or the length of the first hole of the locking bushing to the top of the shaft. Anyone?
Thanks,

I believe the info you want is in the Ford green chassis parts book.
