Default Throw-out bearing spring

Has anyone had actual experience replacing the spring that attaches to the front of the transmission and the hub the throw-out bearing is mounted on while the transmission is installed in the car. I have replace countless numbers while the transmission is sitting on a work bench, but never while in the car.

What I would like to know from someone who has actually replaced the spring through the inspection hatch in the bell housing, how they did it, any special technique, ways to prevent dropping it in the bell housing/clutch (tie a string on it?), and anything else they can add.

Had the spring come off somehow while playing with the pressure plate fingers once. Can't tell you what it took to get it back on, but, it can be done. I can't remember too much about it, so, I must not have used too many bad words.

Just did it a week ago. Helps to put a bungee cord pulling back on clutch peddle, less distance to stretch spring. Test fit each end of spring first, some bending may be required to get spring through the little holes. Hook up trans end first using needle nose then switch to vice grips for throw out end. Clamp vise grips on tight to sping loop and guide it into position.

I did it the same way George just mentioned. To prevent dropping, you might want to run a string through the center of the spring, then pull it out once both ends are hooked.
