Default 1939 ford glove box

I am considering installing a USA 230 radio in the glove box of my 39 ford deluxe. Radio dimensions are 6.75"d x 7"w x 1.5h. Does anyone have the glove box inside dimensions? Unfortunately my car is in storage 1200 miles away. Jon Laing

The glove box interior dimensions are approximately 8 inches deep, 11 inches wide and 6 inches tall, that is in a '39 Convertible Sedan, I don't know if the closed cars are the same.

Hi Jon...... I installed a 12 volt radio in my 39 glove compartment. but I took out the glove box itself and made a plywood box that goes the height of the opening and goes in about 3 inches toward the front of the car. This allows for enough room to mount the radio, and when closing the glove box door, it allows enough room for the clock to clear the radio head. Prior to the install I used a black felt material over the plywood , then installed the plywood box, using existing holes in the dash. I also got a couple of parts 39 radios made one good head with the correct dials and bulbs, that would light the dials. I took the old speaker out, got two small new speakers which had to be custom mounted on an angle, facing each other, into the original radio head. Now my new, hidden 12 volt radio plays through the two small speakers behind the original speaker enclosure , and the radio bulbs were wired into the light switch. I have a separate 12 volt marine battery that lives in my trunk, inside a " vintage " picnic basket to power the 12 volt radio. I probably spent $200 for radio, battery, speakers, and misc materials, not including the 39 radio head maybe some of this might help.

How far dose the clock extend into the glove box when the door is closed? Jon Laing

Hi Jon...... Just came in from the garage. The clock sticks out 1 and 1/8 th inch from the rear of the back of the glove box door. As I mentioned in a previous post, I recessed my mounting surface for my radio 2 and 1/2 inches. the radio face plate sticks out maybe 1/ 2 inch. Still plenty of room. Hope this helps !

It sounds to me like there is room for a radio plus approximately 1/2 the glove box for storage. I would build a box with the top half being the radio and the bottom half = storage. Is that practical? My car is 1200 miles away or I could figure this stuff out for myself. Jon Laing

Hi Jon...You could do this in a number of ways considering your needs, but best if you do your planning with a 39 dash board and glove box in front of you for your final measurements.
