The gas shut off valve in the engine compartment on a '31 seems like it would be a pain. A lot easier to shut off the fuel from inside the passenger's compartment as we're told is a good idea whenever you leave the car sitting.
SO, just mulling here, why not put a shut off valve inside the car, and leave the valve on the firewall either open all the time or eliminate it? Anybody with a '31 doing this? |

There are no threaded fittings under the tank on a late '31. A single soldered piece extends from the tank bottom and through the firewall. You would have to remove and modify the tank, or use an earlier tank with a bunch of fittings. I have electric shutoff solenoids on both my late '31s near the carb.

I do the same as bluesonoco above except it is mounted on the firewall below the original shutoff. I had to make a bracket but it works and relieves my worries. Wiring it up is another issue because the model a does not have an electrical source that cuts off with the ign. Key the key switch just cuts off the coil from the points.

I installed the elec shutoff about an inch past the underhood shut off and wired it to the coil if I remember correctly. So much easier.

On my wife's 31 roadster I also added the electric shutoff just below the under hood original shutoff. I hooked it to a push/pull switch I found at an auto parts store and made a simple bracket and mounted it to one of the original screws for the dash rail just above the steering wheel which is easy for my wife to see and use and really not that noticeable.

![]() A hidden tiny toggle under the dash rail makes it easy to shut it off while running and run the carb dry at the end of the day. |

On my late 31 sport coupe I use one of Bratton's gas lines with a shutoff valve in the middle. Works good. I've rebuilt the shutoffs on my other Model As but they all leak just a few drops. I keep a plastic bucket under the carburetors when they're in the garage.
