I have a 9 digit engine s/n preceded and followed by a star. No charts carry that large a #, so I'm guessing I'm dealing with a replacement engine, but did they make 4 cylinder engines thru 9 digits?

According to Vince's site probably the last Rouge built and numbered Model

You should not find a number over 5000000 as this was the start of the Model B engines. Ford stopped producing the Model A engines but left a few extra numbers for post production Model A engines. Any pictures?

I would say that not an original Ford stamping, there are no letters at the beginning.

For what it's worth the pad is 2 3/4" long. The pad looks to be original (very old) as well as the stampings. The edges are rounded and it looks like it was cast into the block. The head has a cast B on it.
So I'm not sure what Ive got here. Is there any way to determine, from an external view, whether this is an A or B engine?

Probably an A with a B head. Does it have a fuel pump on the right side of the engine??

If the head has the B cast into it it's a high compression Police head, very desirable .

No pump, so I'm guessing I've got a rebuilt A engine (by someone) with a good head. Did a compression ck on it last week got 82# in 3 cyls and 72# in no 3 hole. Currently going thru thru a stop leak cycle hoping for a quick cheap fix, and then I'll tap the oil pan and see what comes out. I was told the engine was rebuilt in the late 80's and the odometer was zeroed out, now has 1,674 miles on it and it runs strong.

Could it be that some one ground the original number off and inserted there ss number which was. Common practice back in the day before identity thieving of our current life style. I personally have found the ss numbers on many old car parts and cars over the years as a form of ownership, especially if the owner had one stolen in their past. Today it would be very unwise to identify anything with your ss number.
