Guys,
My engine compartment / engine needs cleaned up and painted. What would you all recommend for cleaning up an old Flathead that don't look like it's ever been cleaned and painted since new? Thanks!!! |

Clean it with a solvent that doesn't eat paint so you won't damage your exterior finish. Then remove as many bolt-on engine components that can be easily removed and tape off openings. The same goes for the fire wall. Then wrap aluminum foil tightly around each remaining component you don't want painted. The patiently clean the areas you want painted with solvent. Years ago, I used gasolene or kerosene, but I am sure there is better stuff now. Then cover the engine and paint the engine compartment. I used a small touch up spray gun. Then hand brush the engine with Bill Hirsch's engine enamel. It flows out nice and smooth and is very resistant to gasolene. I used acrylic enamel with hardner on the sheetmetal.
