Default Good Morning!!!Door locking question.

What was the logic behind locking the driver's side door from the inside and then going around and locking the passenger side door from the outside????? Saving money?????

back n the day safety feature. Everyone was trained to get out on curb side of street or road . If you watch old movies , the actors always get in and out usually on curbside.most of these will be seen in movies around 1928-1938 or very early 40's. this is rumored to be the reason for key lock on passanger side. have fun modelAtony tony white Lafayette, LA but I always wondered if this was true then WHY did the spare fender well tire end up on driver side on some cars. traffic side very unsafe. GO FIGURE.

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where's my manners!!!!Of course. Same as walking on the inside on a sidewalk it Europe, the morning craps in the pots use to come out the windows into the streets to be washed on down and out of town. Or walking on the outside of the lady in the states to keep the puddles from auto being thrown onto your lady friend.

That's logical too..............and I guess, since the roads/streets back then weren't paved, it would keep a fellow's shoes from getting muddy too.

Who knows but, all the possibilities are all positive ones.

Very simple,

You got out of the car on the curb side rather than into ongoing traffic.
Simple safety concept that worked.

I think that is more logical but I think today, I'll use Mitch's explanation somehow to my advantage. At my age, I need all the help I can muster up with the ladies, especially the younger ones.

From the old original home movies I have seen here and elsewhere, there were no lanes painted on the roads .

These days, at least you can expect cars to travel in a reasonably certain place on the road within the lane.

Back then, cars drove wherever they liked just generally on their side of centre .

My local town is an old town with a single lane road and shop verandahs, almost untouched from the 1800/s, and I hardly look behind when I throw my small roadster door open, as I know it does not protrude much past the running board .

When I am in my winnebago, I wait for traffic before opening the door .

So I think the opposite locking system was because of habit of sliding across because you could not trust the drivers in the day going past your driver's door in non-laned traffic.

Pull up on the gear shift and swing it out of the way. There were T's with no drivers side doors!
