Hello All

,
I am getting ready to take my front hubs off to investigate why the LF CLICKs once when I apply the brake

. I have not had these hubs off yet as I only have had the truck 1.5 Years. What should I be looking for?

Hi Don,

Honestly, have no idea.

However, maybe remove hub, have a buddy depress the brake pedal "slowly" & "observe" all moving parts:

A. While the hub is at rest; &,

B. Next, also while spinning.

If you hear the click when you're rolling, it could be worn backing plate bolt holes/to spindle. Other clicks can be many things, but check the brake spring first. I've had a few issues with repro springs, even originals sometimes can click every time if they were put on with a "twist" in them and the hook part of the spring will "click" in the brake shoe hole when brake is applied and spring starts to stretch.

The front backing plate bolts should be installed such that the head of the bolt is inside the brake drum and the nut is on the inboard side of the backing plates. In other words on the outside of the backing plate facing the center of the car. This is opposite in the way the rear backing plates are installed.

I have taken many front ends apart and found the nuts installed inside the brake drum. The outside of the nuts will come in contact with rotating hardware. It could be the source of the clicking.

Obtain a copy of Bratton's catalog. Call them at 800-255-1929 and they will send you one free. There is a diagram drawing inside that shows how the front end is assembled. As you take the front end apart compare it to the drawing and you will probably find where someone put something together wrong.

I have heard it said many times that the Model A is a very simple car. That is true as long as one has knowledge of how it was simply put together.

Id say look for a wallowed out hole or loose bolt or somehting. Check for obvious signs of rubbing or oddly polished/smooth parts that normally shouldnt be...
