I brought home another load of parts the other day, (chevy) and realized I have a disease. I can't stop buying and my store houses are full. I don't need one more piece of rust around here, but can't help myself.... really.
What's your story? |

I figure all my stuff is going to my estate. That way, my wife and son can sell it.
At best, part of my 401K retirement plan. Ha Ha One problem, if one is not careful, the innocent and unknowing will get $.15 on the $1.00 by the time the buzzards pick the bones. You best make sure your heirs know the value and a plan of orderly disposal!!!!!!!!!! And, yes, I buy stuff I already have and know I have 3 of them and need 1. IMHO |

Seems we all have the same affliction! I am currently cleaning out my moms house of surpluss parts that I haven't touched in 30 years. Just got the cast offs from a 30 Tudor, body going to be a street rod. The wife and I were just talking of all the wonderful stuff she'll be able to sell. She has told me in no uncertain terms does she want to deal with all that 'crap', and isn't interested in being that widow in the hoarder story!!

It's best to lighten the load NOW! If you have good stuff (Or worn) sell it now while you still can, before she just junks it. I'm an "Aquierer" too. But I know my wife and kids will never get the value of it, they simply don't have the knowledge or contacts. Sell it Now!

Hi Ronn,
Just one story I witnessed -- there are also others: Visited a guy in 1960 who visited junk yards & Ford Dealerships within 150 miles or so & had collected used & new Model A parts for maybe 25 years to cut up & make doodle-bug type farm vehicles prior to today's (3) & (4) wheelers. His warehouse looked like an organized hardware store with labeled parts. A week after he died in about 1964, his wife & kids called a scrap metal dealer to haul everything away -- the scrap metal dealer was paid with scrap metal & the estate was paid with free haul off service. The family did not even consider placing one "boxed", new Zenith carburetors, (with original numbered jets), in his coffin, or maybe a set of "boxed" 3-X's. Agree; stay away from Hershey & head out for a wonderful vacation spot for a week or two! |

I hear you. I just moved. My old house had a big garage and a loft. I couldn't believe how much stuff I was able to squirrel away in 13 years. Before I moved I had a big sale and unloaded a lot the parts that I was stock piling. It actually felt good to get rid of the stuff.
I do believe there is a little bit of a compulsion that causes us old car guys to hoard stuff. I also think that the amassing of parts became a distraction from getting my project done. I've made a consicious decision to not ever hoard parts like I did before (well, all except V8 intakes ![]() A car is no fun if you and your family can't drive it around. |

Collecting model A parts is a big part of the hobby for me, My wife has a pretty good idea what the parts are. I usually put notes with the parts stating where and when I got them and what I paid.

Thanks for all the advice and laughs....
Brent, I'll attend 2 of the 3-as they say, two outta three ain't bad! Keesey, you're not getting the 32 rims back-period. Banky, just finished 2 grilled cheeseburgers right before I read this and couldn't stop laughing.... Terry, I completely agree with you and keep trying to do that. Unfortunately, the pile keeps growing. My wife told me to clean up or she was leaving. Thank God she left.... Maybe that's why I keep buying.... |

I ran into a fellow I knew last summer at a gas station buying ice coffee for his crew. He's a scrapper, and had been emptying out a barn of an estate where the owner had piled up A junk for 60 years. No sheet metal, but dozens of rolling chassis, dozens of rear ends, engines, wheels, just dozens of everything. He had two trailers there on his way to the scrapyard. He has a pretty good idea how much he has on when he lets out the clutch. The trailers were piled high with chassis, engines, front and rear axles.I could have had the trailerloads for $1500.each.I hated to say no,and hated to see the stuff go for scrap, but I could never have come up with the money for the eight loads he hauled out of there. It was all number one and frag,so the price was over $300.per ton at the time.He was carrying 5-6 ton to a trailer. He had to have full insurance and workmans comp to work on the property, and his offer to pay the widow half of scale price was the best offer she had.Even with the price up like it was some scrappers had given her prices to have her pay to remove it.

I was at a Auction house the other day picking up some Civil War relics. Well I got to talking about always looking for Model A stuff. The guy told me they had been up the road a few miles to a Huge Barn packed with Model A parts. The family wanted to get rid of it all. Yea...I know the place I said. Well the Auction company declined on selling the stuff for them....Call the scrappers. Old used pistons, cams, heads, gears, brake shoes, spindles, springs. Get the picture.......
