This is a quick easy tool to make, especially if you already have the slide hammer. Just take a 3/8" carriage bolt and turn the square part off and turn the head to .661" or close to it. You want it to just barely slip inside the bearing, so the lip will grab and pull the bearing out. A couple slaps on the slide hammer and it's out.
I used a short piece of square tubing and a couple nuts to couple the bolt to the slide hammer. I made this several years ago and told myself I was going to make a better coupler by threading a short piece of brass rod, but that job still hasn't gotten done. ![]() |

Another easy, yet messy way to do it is fill the area behind the bearing with grease, then use the proper size dowel and hit it with a hammer using hydraulic action to drive it out.

![]() An old mentor showed me the grease method back in 1966, and I've used grease to remove many pilot bearings and bushings. Back in the 70's I had a bushing that was too worn to hold the pressure, and the bearings must have a good inner seal to hold the grease pressure also, but otherwise it is a good easy method of removal. |

This will make it a cleaner tool and give a more solid hit. ![]() |

Someone on the HAMB came up with a brilliant modification to the grease method... substitute peanut butter for the grease!
Blow out the bearing, then go have a cup of coffee while your faithful dog finds and consumes every speck of spatter. No mess, no waste. Fortunately I have a KRW tool for this job, though. |
